Frozen Hot Chocolate Recipe

Somehow we got into the habit of stopping at a coffee shop anytime we are out on a long shopping trip. They come by it honestly, really. I have always made quick passes through the drive thru to get coffee while out fighting the store crowds. It helps me survive. And as the kids have grown older, they cry foul when I am enjoying my coffee shop drink and tell them they don’t get to join in the fun.

I don’t give in to them every time…because…I’m the mom and I can give them the gift of “No”. But when they do get to choose a drink, you can bet it is frozen hot chocolate. Even when it is Ohio-freezing outside.

Lately, we’ve been starting out our shopping trips with drinks in hand. It’s so much cheaper and the chocolatey goodness keeps smiles on their faces as we work our way down the never-ending shopping list.

Maddie, Braden and Kinslee were the taste testers for this since they are the frozen hot chocolate pros. They suggested some tweaks to my original recipe that gave it just a little extra creaminess and a double chocolate boost.

And although this was the only time I had ever tried frozen hot chocolate, I’d have to say that I now know what their fuss is all about. It’s sweet. Cool. Creamy.

Frozen Hot Chocolate Recipe
This was SO GOOD! I have tried frozen hot chocolate before that was just milk, hot chocolate powder and ice. The melted chocolate you call for in this recipe really made the difference.

Prep Time15 mins
Total Time15 mins

Ingredients

  •     4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate , or milk chocolate (your favorite kind)
  •     1 1/2 cups milk
  •     3-4 cups Ice cubes
  •     1 Tablespoon store-bought hot chocolate powder
  •     2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  •     Whipped Cream for topping, optional

Instructions

  1. Chop the chocolate into small pieces and melt in the microwave on half power, stirring every 20 seconds.
  2. Once melted, add hot chocolate powder and sugar, stirring until well blended. Slowly stir in 1/2 cup milk, stirring until smooth. Cool to room temperature.
  3. In a blender, add the remaining 1 cup milk, chocolate mixture and ice. Blend well until smooth. Taste and add more ice if you want it thicker, and another spoonful of hot chocolate mix if you'd like it sweeter.
  4. Serve immediately, topped with sweetened whipped cream and chocolate curls, if desired.
